Pitfalls (what gets oversold)
I’ve seen vendors pitch responsible AI as a magic shield — “Our AI is responsible, so you don’t have to worry.” That’s not how it works. Here are the common traps:
- “It’s fair because we trained it on lots of data.” More data doesn’t automatically mean fairer. If your training data has old biases, the AI will learn them. You need active testing, not just volume.
- “We have a responsible AI policy.” A document on a shelf doesn’t protect you. Responsible AI is a practice, not a poster. I’ve seen companies with beautiful policies that nobody actually follows.
- “The AI explains itself.” Some tools claim to be “explainable,” but the explanation might be gibberish to a non-technical person. A good explanation is one your team can actually use to make a decision.
- “We don’t need to worry about bias — we’re a small business.” Bias can hurt small businesses too. If your AI chatbot starts giving bad advice to Spanish-speaking customers, that’s a reputation problem you can’t afford.
The biggest oversell is the idea that responsible AI is a one-time setup. It’s not. It’s ongoing monitoring, like checking your smoke detectors. If you set it and forget it, you’re taking a risk.
