AI Glossary

Parameters are the internal numbers an AI model learns during training — think of them as the model’s “knobs” that get dialed in to make predictions, and while more can mean more capability, it also comes with tradeoffs.

What it really means

If you’ve ever heard someone say “this model has 175 billion parameters” and nodded along without really knowing what that meant, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. Parameters are basically the model’s learned settings — the numbers it adjusts during training to get better at its job.

Imagine you’re tuning a radio. You’ve got a dial for volume, one for bass, one for treble, maybe a few more. Each dial is a parameter. A simple radio might have 5 dials. A really fancy one might have 50. More dials let you fine-tune the sound, but it also means more time to figure out the right settings — and you might accidentally make things worse if you twist the wrong one.

In AI, parameters work similarly. When a model is trained, it starts with random numbers and gradually adjusts them based on the data it sees. Each adjustment is a tiny nudge toward making better predictions. After training on millions of examples, those numbers settle into patterns that the model uses to answer questions, generate text, or recognize images.

So when someone says “this model has 7 billion parameters,” they’re really saying “this model has 7 billion learned knobs that help it make decisions.” It’s a rough measure of the model’s size and complexity, but it’s not the whole story — a model with more parameters isn’t automatically smarter or more useful for your business.

Where it shows up

You’ll hear about parameters most often when people compare large language models like GPT, Claude, or Llama. A model’s parameter count is usually in the name or the marketing — “Llama 3 8B” means 8 billion parameters, “GPT-4” is rumored to be over a trillion (though OpenAI doesn’t confirm).

But parameters aren’t just for chatbots. Every AI model has them — the image recognition tool that a local auto shop in Sanford might use to scan parts, the fraud detection system a Winter Park dental practice could use to flag insurance claims, the recommendation engine for a Lake Nona restaurant’s menu. All of them have parameters, just usually in the millions rather than billions.

When you’re shopping for AI tools, you might see parameter counts in technical specs or hear salespeople brag about them. It’s a quick way to size up a model, but it’s not the only thing that matters — a well-trained smaller model can often outperform a sloppy larger one for specific tasks.

Common SMB use cases

For most small and mid-market businesses in Central Florida, you don’t need to worry about parameter counts directly. But understanding them helps you make smarter choices when picking AI tools. Here’s where it matters:

  • Choosing between AI models. If you’re an HVAC company in Maitland looking for a customer service chatbot, a smaller model (say, 7 billion parameters) might handle FAQs just fine and run faster on your existing hardware. A larger model (70 billion+) might be overkill and slower — like using a semi-truck to deliver a pizza.
  • Running models locally vs. in the cloud. Bigger models need more computing power. A pool service in Clermont might want an AI that runs on a laptop or tablet for field work — that means a smaller parameter model that fits in memory. A law firm in downtown Orlando with a dedicated server could run something larger.
  • Fine-tuning for your business. When I help clients fine-tune a model on their own data (like a dental practice’s appointment history or an auto shop’s repair logs), the parameter count tells me how much custom training data we’ll need. More parameters usually means more examples to train effectively.
  • Cost estimation. Cloud AI services charge by usage, and bigger parameter models cost more per query. Knowing the tradeoff helps you budget — a small restaurant in Lake Nona doesn’t need a trillion-parameter model to generate daily specials.

Pitfalls (what gets oversold)

The biggest trap I see is the “bigger is better” mindset. A salesperson might say “our model has 100 billion parameters, so it’s the best.” That’s like saying a car with a bigger engine is always better — it ignores fuel efficiency, reliability, and whether it fits your actual needs.

Here’s what doesn’t get talked about enough:

  • More parameters = more training data needed. A massive model trained on bad data is worse than a small model trained on great data. I’ve seen a 7-billion-parameter model outperform a 70-billion one for a specific task simply because the smaller one was fine-tuned on relevant examples.
  • Bigger models are slower and more expensive. For real-time applications — like a chatbot answering customer questions for a Sanford auto shop — a huge model might take seconds to respond, frustrating customers. A smaller model can answer in milliseconds.
  • Parameter count doesn’t measure reliability. A model can have billions of parameters and still confidently give wrong answers (hallucinate). It’s a size metric, not a quality metric.
  • It’s easy to get lost in the arms race. Companies keep releasing bigger models because it’s a marketing hook, not because it’s always useful. Don’t let a number drive your decision — focus on what the model actually does for your business.
