Think of hyperparameters as the settings you dial in on a radio before you start listening — they control how the model learns, not what it learns.

What it really means

When I explain hyperparameters to a client — say, a pool service owner in Clermont who wants to predict which accounts are likely to churn — I start with a simple analogy. Imagine you’re baking a cake. The recipe tells you how much flour, sugar, and eggs to use. Those are the parameters the model learns from your data. But the oven temperature? That’s a hyperparameter. You set it before you start baking, and it affects how the cake rises, how evenly it bakes, and whether it comes out dry or moist.

In AI, hyperparameters are the settings you choose before training begins. Common ones include learning rate (how big a step the model takes when adjusting its guesses), batch size (how many examples it looks at before updating), and number of epochs (how many times it goes through the whole dataset). These aren’t learned from data — you, the human, pick them based on experience, trial and error, or automated tuning tools.

I’ve seen business owners get tripped up here because they hear “AI does everything automatically.” It doesn’t. Someone still has to decide these knobs, and the wrong settings can turn a useful model into a useless one.

Where it shows up

Hyperparameters appear in almost every AI model you’ll encounter. If you’re using a pre-built tool — like a chatbot for your Winter Park dental practice or a scheduling optimizer for your Sanford auto shop — the hyperparameters are already set by the developer. You probably won’t touch them directly.

But if you’re working with a consultant (like me) to build a custom model, hyperparameters come into play. For example, when I helped a Maitland HVAC company build a model to predict when a compressor might fail, we spent time tuning the learning rate. Too high, and the model jumped to wrong conclusions. Too low, and it took forever to train. We ran several experiments to find the sweet spot.

You’ll also see hyperparameters mentioned in documentation for AI platforms, cloud services, or open-source tools. They’re labeled with names like learning_rate, batch_size, max_depth (for decision trees), or num_layers (for neural networks).

Common SMB use cases

For small and mid-market businesses in Central Florida, hyperparameter tuning usually happens behind the scenes, but here’s where it matters:

  • Customer churn prediction. A Lake Nona restaurant wants to know which regulars are about to stop coming. The model’s accuracy depends on setting the right batch size and learning rate. Too coarse, and you miss subtle patterns; too fine, and you overfit to last week’s specials.
  • Inventory forecasting. A downtown Orlando law firm might not think of this, but a retail client in Winter Park uses hyperparameter tuning to balance how much the model trusts recent sales vs. seasonal trends.
  • Lead scoring. For a Clermont pool service, we tuned the number of trees in a random forest model (a hyperparameter) to get reliable lead rankings without overcomplicating things.
  • Automated email responses. A small real estate office in Sanford uses a language model with a “temperature” hyperparameter — lower temperature means more predictable replies, higher means more creative (and riskier) ones.

In each case, the business owner doesn’t need to know the math. But they should know that the model’s performance isn’t magic — it’s the result of someone choosing these settings carefully.

Pitfalls (what gets oversold)

The biggest oversell I hear is that AI “just works” out of the box. It doesn’t. Hyperparameter tuning is often the difference between a model that’s 60% accurate and one that’s 90% accurate. I’ve had clients ask, “Can’t the model tune itself?” Yes, there are automated tools like grid search or Bayesian optimization, but they still need a human to define the range of values to try. And they can be expensive in compute time.

Another pitfall: overfitting. If you set the number of epochs too high, the model memorizes your training data instead of learning general patterns. I once saw a dental practice’s appointment scheduling model get perfect scores on historical data but fail miserably on new patients — because the hyperparameters were tuned to the point of memorization.

Then there’s the “set it and forget it” trap. Hyperparameters that work for one dataset may not work for another. If your business changes — say, you add a new service line or your customer base shifts — the optimal settings might change too.

Finally, avoid the temptation to tweak hyperparameters endlessly. I’ve seen teams spend weeks chasing a 1% improvement that didn’t matter for their bottom line. For most SMBs, a good-enough model that runs reliably is better than a perfect one that’s fragile.
