The EU AI Act is Europe’s new law that groups AI uses by risk level—from unacceptable to minimal—and sets different rules for each, even if your business isn’t in Europe.

What it really means

The EU AI Act is a regulation passed by the European Union that categorizes artificial intelligence applications based on how much risk they pose to people’s safety, rights, or privacy. Think of it like a traffic light system: red means banned, yellow means you need to slow down and check things carefully, and green means you can go ahead with just a few basic rules.

The short answer: if you sell products or services to anyone in the EU, or if you use AI tools that process data from EU residents, this law could apply to your business. The Act breaks AI uses into four risk levels:

A Lake Nona restaurant using AI-powered inventory forecasting likely falls into the minimal risk bucket, so they’d just need to make sure their vendor is compliant.

The Act also affects any AI system that interacts with people—chatbots on your website, voice assistants, or automated email replies. If you have customers in the EU, you need to tell them they’re talking to a machine, not a human.

Common SMB use cases

For small and mid-market businesses in Central Florida, the EU AI Act mostly matters in a few specific areas:
