An AI Pilot is a small, time-boxed test of an AI tool to see if it actually delivers value before you commit to a full rollout.

What it really means

An AI Pilot is the business equivalent of a test drive. You pick one specific problem, one small team, and one AI tool, then run it for a set period—usually two to four weeks. The goal is simple: find out if the tool actually helps before you spend real money or ask your whole team to change how they work.

  • Ignoring the “no” result. I’ve seen owners keep paying for a tool after a failed pilot because they’d already told the board they were “doing AI.” A pilot that says “no” is a success—it saved you from a bad investment.

The hype around AI Pilots makes them sound like a magic wand. They’re not. They’re just a disciplined way to test before you buy. That’s boring, but it works.
