AI literacy is the ability to understand what artificial intelligence can and cannot do — it’s the foundation under any successful rollout, and it matters more than the tools themselves.
What it really means
When I talk to business owners around Orlando, the first question I get is usually: “What tool should I buy?” That’s the wrong starting point. AI literacy isn’t about knowing how to use a specific app. It’s about having a practical, grounded sense of how AI works, where it’s reliable, and where it falls flat.

- “Just train everyone on ChatGPT.” That’s like saying “just teach everyone how to use a calculator.” The real skill is knowing when to use it, when to put it down, and how to check the answer. A single training session won’t build literacy — it takes ongoing practice and honest conversations about failures.
- “AI literacy means everyone becomes a coder.” No. Your bookkeeper doesn’t need to write Python. They need to know that an AI tool might misinterpret a spreadsheet column labeled “net30” as a date. That’s practical awareness, not programming.
- “You can buy a course and be done.” Literacy fades fast if you’re not using it. I’ve seen businesses spend thousands on training, then six months later nobody remembers the key concepts because they never applied them to real work.
- “AI is getting smarter, so literacy matters less.” Actually, the opposite is true. As AI gets better at sounding human, it gets harder to spot mistakes. Literacy becomes more important, not less.
The biggest oversell is the idea that AI literacy is a one-time checkbox. It’s a muscle — you have to keep using it, or it atrophies.
